Angling in Galway comprises both river and sea angling. Galway offers the cleanest waters and environment possible for the sportsperson and is renowned for its quality of game, coarse and sea fishing. Salmon and trout are abundant in the many lakes and rivers with Lough Corrib regarded as the best fishery in Europe. Pike, Bream and Roach are but a few to whet the angler's appetite.

The Western Fisheries Region is famous for its brown trout loughs, rivers and streams on the Corrib system.

The rivers renowned for good brown trout include the Clare River which flows into Lough Corrib. Fish taken from this river in recent times weighed in at over 7lb and 8lb, weights which must be a stimulus for any fisherman worthy of the title.

Shore angling mainly comprises mackerel and pollack from mid August to end of September.

Most shore fishing takes place along the promenade away from bathing areas.Rocky promontories can produce Bass and Wrasse. Shore angling is free.

Galway Bay provides some fine deep sea fishing with porbeagle, congor and blue shark in abundance. There are also some fine specimens of pollack, cod and ling.
